The back-end of ecommerce — the picking, packing, shipping, returning, and accounting — is where margin is made or lost. Most ecommerce conversations focus on acquisition and conversion; the operations conversations are less glamorous but often more impactful on profitability.
Post-purchase experience is the newest frontier in operations. When a customer places an order, the window before fulfilment is an underused opportunity: for upsells, for order corrections before the pick team touches it, and for setting expectations about delivery. Order Editing — the subject of episode 112 — is a direct example: giving customers the ability to fix their own orders (wrong size, wrong address, add an item) before fulfilment eliminates a category of support tickets and cancellations that previously required manual intervention.
Returns management is a persistent margin drain for fashion, electronics and home goods merchants. The brands that have reduced return rates most effectively have done it at the product page level — better photography, accurate sizing information, honest product descriptions — rather than by making returns harder. The brands that have made their returns process itself a competitive advantage have done it by making it fast and frictionless.
Fulfilment automation — connecting Shopify to a 3PL or warehouse management system, automating pick lists and shipping label generation, and syncing inventory across channels — is the infrastructure work that lets operations scale without headcount scaling proportionally. Brightpearl (episode 61), Gorgias (episode 26), and the suite of Shopify Flow automations are the tools most commonly doing this work for mid-market merchants.
