THE MILK BOTTLE ECOMMERCE SHOW · 2 EPISODES

Platform Migration.

Replatforming a live ecommerce store is one of the highest-risk, highest-reward projects a merchant can undertake. Done well, it removes the platform ceiling that's been holding back growth. Done badly, it wipes out months of SEO work, breaks customer accounts, and costs more to fix than the migration itself.

The most common migrations we see are from WooCommerce and WordPress — merchants who built on open source when they started, accumulated years of customisation, and now find that every change requires a developer, every plugin update breaks something else, and the hosting overhead is eating into margins. Shopify removes all of that: there's no infrastructure to manage, no security patching, no hosting bill separate from the platform fee.

A successful migration has several non-negotiable phases. Product and customer data needs to be audited and cleaned before import — not after. URL structures need to be mapped and redirected correctly from day one, because a broken redirect on a high-traffic product page is immediate lost revenue. The new theme needs to be performance-tested before launch, not after. And payment providers, shipping rules and tax settings all need to be validated in a staging environment that mirrors production as closely as possible.

The episodes in this hub cover real migration stories: what merchants wished they'd known before they started, how to protect SEO through a replatform, and the operational decisions that make the difference between a clean cutover and a chaotic one. If you're currently on WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce or a custom-built platform and considering the move to Shopify, these conversations are the closest thing to a pre-migration briefing.
